The Pole Position is gaining more grounds among the racing community and their chiefs. Just for the record; the function of Pole Position is not a new method even if it looks like that when visiting this webpage. The method is quit old, since early 60´s ski racing coaches from France, Austria and US used cords and strings in order to stabilize upper body. The Pole Position is a refined and userfriendly version and here are some fresh comments:

Takuji Kambayashi Ski Racing Director, Japan FIS Racers (published in March 2012 issue of Ski journal)

“You can sense your own position in the run that will lead you to the optimal position. By keeping upper body tension the direction of rotation is fixed, which leads to real-time orientation of the arms and control and possible modification of lower body.”

From Canada WC Team:

“The team tried out the Pole Position during some freeskiing in in Hinterreit, Austria. It seems like a great tool. It attaches to the pole effectively and the grip maintains its position. The construction is solid and the buckles allowing it to detach during the ride up the hill are great. It is a little restrictive for some athletes that need to move their arms, but in general I think that it’s current format is perfect for its purpose”.

Tim Gfeller, Canadian Alpine Ski Team, Women’s World Cup – Technical

From Finland WC Racing:

“While using Pole Position and keeping upper body tension a consequence is the dynamic balance. Especially for young ones it’s a good instrument to teach basic position of the arms.Pole Position is a support for the upper body to get the basic position of the arms. From a technical view it´s important to know that stability also depends on the lower part of the body – knees, ankles, edges and snow contact.”

Skiers must get used to Pole Position and they must accept it as a tool.

We will use Pole Position in the future for:

On the first trainings in the start of the season, to improve basic position

For corrective exercise in the start and during the season

We just got a fresh comment in our inbox from the trainer Mauro Pini of Switzerland. Jakob Svensson, f.m. Swedish Freestyle and partner of Pole Position did talk to Mauro about basic training and this is his comment on what Pole Position really does after training with Pole Position in New Zeeland:

I found Pole Position an interesting tool. It helps the skier:

To find the best body position, especially those who have problems to get easily into the turn.

To get rid of bad habits on upper body position (shoulders, arms and hips).

To keep focus on details.

Thanks for your comments Mauro and we will see you

Snow Dome in Bispingen is the place for action sport in the summer and winter. The Arena is operated within Sölden Ski resort and is owned by the Austrian Company.

The Ski School has aprox 10.000 guests a year with mostly beginners and groups, the arena more than 150000 visitors per year. Skiing wise the indoor facility has over 300 meters slopes with a great park and beginners area. We meet with Stefan Moldenhauer, manager for the Ski School with 6 years indoor and 6 years in Zillertal with both skiing and snowboarding teaching experience.

Stefan decides to use our product in a beginners group a guess what, a new way of using the training strap was invented. We do think the Snow Dome experience is the way go, good job.

Thanks Stefan (and Stefan) for a great day indoors guys, see you soon.

The German Instructor attaches the Pole Position to beginner’s thumbs for a stabile upper body. Great exercise for beginners. Nick Hill, PSIA and Aspen Snowsport School showed us the same exercise in early 2010, small world.

The Pole Position training method has grown steadily into schools and in clubs over Europe this season. Parallel and visual training for club racers and race training to beginners’ fall-line training with Ski Schools and instructors. In the ski club level the products are used foremost in visual parallel training, which is getting young FIS racers and youth to understand hands-hips combinations with amazing and long lasting results.

We are now getting interest from clubs in north and mid-Europe. At instructor level the guests and groups understand skiing in ways we did not think was possible 12 months ago. Why you body reacts different when you ski the line of gravity and how stabile you body becomes when you arms are continuously in front of your body. These basic things are changing the customer’s view of themselves. Instructors now can concentrate on more important things.

Just two years ago the Pole Position was nothing to nobody. Today – hundreds or thousands of customers, schools and skiers later – our story has somewhat changed the game. Our mission to develop simple training gadgets has now reached new milestones that we did not anticipate at all. Just during the past season we had several magazines write articles and top ranked WC alpine racers testing and evaluating. We now have representation from Japan in the east and US in the west. In Europe we are getting questions frequently from clubs and schools throughout Italy, Germany, France, Austria, Sweden and Norway.

A big THANKS to EVERYONE for great support and understanding that new things take time and hopefully we see you next season. Have a great summer.

Special thanks for 2011 season to: Bengt Lundberg, Phil Anker, Klaus Baumgartner, Markus Hirnböck, Michael Hartweger and Patrick Koller Austria. Anthony Mochelin, Mike Beaudot, Felix St Clair Renard, Robban Asp, Fabien Cartier, Patrick Paltz and Pia Palm of France. And all the new customers, schools and people who support us on our mission to push skiing further.

I don’t think that I ever came across such a useful tool that requires very little effort to incorporate in practice sessions. How come no one thought of this before? I believe that this invention is right up there in terms of ingenuity with innovations such as safety belts and airbags. I am grateful that Pole Position is taking an educational approach to the alpine sport industry.

Last weekend of January we were in Courmayeur for a couple of days of skiing. We were all psyched for good food, soft skiing and the Italian way life with antipasti, prime, secondi, grappa and cappuccino de lux in our mind. But we also had a mission – to make Courmayuer the first ski resort in Italy to use Pole Position.

After a couple of phrases in English-Italien and advanced sign language we got to meet with the head of the Ski School, Paolo Broglio. We did not have to explain anything; he understood in an instant the how’s and the why’s just by looking and then he smiled. After a couple runs with Paolo – he was thrilled and just as excited as us about the simplicity and geniality of the Pole Position.

Paolo, now equipped with his new toy, wanted use it on a customer to the school right away – a person who apparently had an incurable case of involuntary arm-waving. He thought that would be a good test.

We are certain that he managed to fix the customers arm-problem and Maestro di Ski Monte Bianco is now the first Italian ski school to become a part of the Pole Position program – but I will not be the last.

Ciao // Louise Wandel and Miranda Ericsson
